St. Louis had an early introduction to winter this year. On November 30th and December 1st, mother nature threw her best at us. Since this storm was in my backyard and I got to see it first hand, I thought it would be interesting to learn how Missouri DOT attacked it.

Owen Hasson is the Missouri DOT District 6 Maintenance Superintendent. After he had a chance to catch up a little after the storm, I talked with him at the MODOT District 6 Office to get his take on the storm. (more…)

The Texas Department of Transportation Tyler District is the first DOT to produce a podcast (as far as I can find in podcast directories).

You can listen to the TxDOT podcast at: http://tylerpodcasts.tamu.edu/

Larry Krantz, the public information officer for the Tyler District, started using podcasts as another means to provide DOT information to the public.

Before we begin interviews on current day winter maintenance practices and technology, I thought it would be interesting to take a historical look at winter maintenance and some of the changes that have occurred over the years.

To learn about winter maintenance 40 years ago, I spoke with Gordon Bell, a retired veteran of the Colorado Department of Transportation. Gordon discusses the equipment and practices used in the early 1960s as compared to today. (more…)
